Education and Training Resource Center
The Education and Training Resource Center provides volunteers, employees and board members of non-profit and social service organizations opportunities for professional development through quality training and education workshops. All training workshops are accredited through the Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board, providing 3 CPEs for social workers and counselors, unless otherwise noted.
Connections can develop a comprehensive training module specifically tailored to meet the needs of non-profit staff and boards. The training capsule is presented as a part of a board retreat or designated board/staff training. A partial list of training topics include:

Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children is a revolutionary sexual abuse prevention training program founded in response to staggering statistics: 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. HelpLine is committed to protecting our children by empowering adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child abuse through our Stewards of Children training. Designed for organization that serve children and youth, concerned parents and community members, the training teaches that protecting children is an adult’s job.

Drug Identification and Awareness | February 25
Identifying the signs and symptoms of drug abuse
Drug use is prevalent in every level of our society today. The use of illegal substances is not limited to one socio-economic level, race, sex, age or neighborhood. The information provided here will enable participants to recognize the signs and symptoms of the abuse of various street drugs, as well as the paraphernalia commonly associated with drug use. This workshop will also address how social service providers can help maintain their safety while working with consumers in their homes.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) | March 8-9
Learning how to maximize your position of trust to help persons at risk for suicide
Learn suicide first aid. The vast majority of those thinking about suicide will find some way to signal their intent. Most suicidal people are looking for another option. They don’t want to die. But preventing suicide takes two people—a helper and the person at risk. ASIST, a model program developed by LivingWorks, is designed to help persons in a position of trust become more willing, ready and able to help persons at risk for suicide. Just as “CPR” skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid.
ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Participants receive a 152-page Suicide Intervention Handbook and a full color, tear-resistant pocket card featuring intervention, and risk review and safe plan development principles. This course is designed for all caregivers including professionals, physicians, pharmacists, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy and community volunteers. Learn to recognize and estimate risk, and become more effective at helping people at risk. The benefits will live on.

Discovering the value and necessity of ethical practice in social work.
This presentation will provide information on the Board process of investigation and give participants an opportunity to discuss issues and ethical dilemmas that Social Workers and Counselors face every day. It is also an in-depth look at the Code of Professional Conduct, what not to do and the consequences licensees can face if they violate the rules that govern the profession.

Sexual Assault Response Team | April 21
Provide new staff and service providers with an awareness and importance of immediate reporting of sexual violence
Sexual Assault Response Teams are a mixture of various disciplines working together to prevent, recognize, and prosecute sexual violence. This SART training will utilize the diverse and knowledgeable background of team members to train professionals on recognizing and reporting concerns of sexual violence and show how the various members work together to achieve this goal. .

Social Worker Supervision | June 8
Developing purposeful, goal-driven supervision of employees
This workshop will assist managers in cultivating appropriate and effective techniques for supporting their staff in service delivery. While there are several key components to quality supervision, this session will focus on best practices and seek to increase understanding around these practices and challenge participants to identify their own strengths and areas of improvement in the area of supervision.

Working with Persons Diagnosed with Personality Disorders and their Partners
Personality Disorders, formerly referred to as Character Disorders, are a class of personality types and behaviors that the American Psychiatric Association identifies as "an enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from expectations of the culture of the individual who exhibits it". During this workshop, participants will learn the definition of Personality Disorders, the diagnostic criteria, the development of Personality Disorders, and cultural considerations.

Understanding the Culture of Gangs
Gangs have been in existence for decades. Gang recruitment has been observed at middle school and high school levels. This workshop will present a variety of information, including the legal definition of a gang; why kids become gang members; signs to look for to determine if someone is a gang member; and what can be done to deter kids from joining gangs.

Strategies in Working with Difficult Caregivers | December 14
Moving toward decreased tension and increased energy to care for yourself and others
In this experiential workshop, participants will explore the theory of compassion fatigue/satisfaction, and through caregiver stories, learn coping mechanisms. Participants will also learn and practice techniques to decrease tension and diminished thought processing, while developing a plan for resiliency to intentionally provide care for yourself and others.
